“Indigenous Leaders Take Action Against Drug Crisis”

Long Lake #58 First Nation Chief John O’Nabigon expressed deep sorrow and frustration following the tragic death of another young community member due to a drug overdose. He emphasized the urgent need to address the ongoing drug crisis affecting the community. In response to the lack of action from government authorities, O’Nabigon has enlisted an Indigenous security company to implement checkpoints within the community.

Earlier this year, Long Lake #58 declared a state of emergency due to the influx of drug traffickers supplying substances to vulnerable community members. The neighboring Ginoogaming First Nation also declared a joint state of emergency in collaboration with Long Lake #58 to combat the same issue. The communities, closely linked through familial ties, have been grappling with rising violence and drug-related crimes.

Chief Sheri Taylor of Ginoogaming First Nation highlighted the concerning rate at which young lives are being lost in the communities. Despite multiple emergency declarations, governmental and policing entities have fallen short in addressing the pressing concerns raised by the communities.

Both Long Lake #58 and Ginoogaming are situated in the Thunder Bay district, which has reported significantly high rates of opioid-related deaths compared to the provincial average. The communities have continuously urged government agencies for enhanced enforcement, increased resources, and a coordinated response to tackle the influx of dangerous drugs.

Anishinabek Police Service (APS) revealed that drug traffickers from the Greater Toronto Area have been transporting illicit substances northward, prompting intercepts and arrests by law enforcement. The RCMP reiterated its commitment to collaborating with Indigenous leadership and policing partners to combat organized crime and ensure community safety.

Long Lake #58 received substantial funding for mental wellness programs, indicating a step towards addressing community safety concerns. Ginoogaming took proactive measures by enacting a community protection order bylaw and engaging Anishinaabe Ambassadors Inc. to enhance security efforts.

The deployment of security measures in Ginoogaming has shown positive outcomes, prompting a sense of security among community members. Chief O’Nabigon emphasized the importance of providing professional services within the community to address addiction issues locally and prevent individuals from seeking care elsewhere.

The overarching goal remains holding drug dealers accountable for their actions while fostering a supportive community environment to navigate through these challenging times.
