After experiencing disturbances for several days, flights at Wabush Airport are set to recommence on Wednesday as confirmed by PAL Airlines. The disruption was caused by the airport’s failure to meet federal firefighting and rescue requirements for flights with over 19 passengers due to a mechanical issue with a firefighting vehicle.
PAL Airlines, the carrier operating flights to and from the Labrador west airport, announced on social media that the necessary firefighting equipment for passenger flights has been reinstated. Consequently, flights 921, 922, 833, and 834 to and from the airport will resume operations starting Wednesday. Affected passengers will receive updated travel information concerning their flight arrangements from the airline’s reservations team.
Prior to the flight resumptions on Wednesday morning, Labrador’s Member of Parliament expressed frustration over the repeated disruptions at the airport but remained optimistic about resolving the latest issue swiftly. Following the maintenance of one fire truck and the failure of a part in the second truck, resulting in both trucks being out of service, airport operations were temporarily halted.
The required parts were expedited from Edmonton and arrived overnight in Wabush to restore firefighting capability. The Member of Parliament emphasized the need for a thorough review of the incident to prevent similar disruptions in the future. The airport has faced ongoing disruptions in the past year, including service shutdowns due to changes in designation and extreme weather conditions.
