Caitlyn Moony, a newcomer to Vancouver from Johannesburg, shares her journey of high hopes and eventual disillusionment with the city. Moving to Vancouver in 2018, she initially envisioned a vibrant life filled with outdoor activities and social interactions. However, as time passed, she faced challenges such as job insecurity, isolation, and a mismatch between her expectations and reality.
Despite the city’s natural beauty and charm, Moony struggled to find her place due to a lack of professional connections and the elusive “Canadian experience” required for job opportunities. Working long hours in a basement apartment, she grappled with feelings of inadequacy and alienation. Criticizing the city’s slower pace, limited transport options, and persistent rain, she longed for the sense of community she had experienced in previous locations.
Feeling increasingly lonely, Moony sought to connect with others but found it difficult to navigate Vancouver’s social scene. The onset of the pandemic exacerbated her isolation, prompting her to leave for London in search of familiarity and liveliness. However, her return to Vancouver after a brief stint in London revealed a newfound appreciation for the city’s tranquility and introspective qualities.
Acknowledging Vancouver’s imperfections and challenges, Moony expresses a desire to reconcile with the city and embrace its unique character. Despite the rainy weather and occasional frustrations, she longs for a sense of belonging and the opportunity to rediscover herself within Vancouver’s serene landscape.
