Olha Terletska, known for her moving choir solo in the King’s annual Christmas broadcast, has a remarkable story to share. Having escaped the turmoil in Ukraine, she now sings in tribute to her cousin who tragically perished in combat. As a member of Songs for Ukraine, Olha’s performance of Carol of the Bells at Westminster Abbey was truly captivating.
Olha, a proud mother of one, revealed that she dedicates her performances to her cousin Bohdan Izmailov, who bravely served in Ukraine’s Air Assault Brigade and lost his life in a special mission in 2023. Reflecting on her participation in the King’s broadcast, Olha expressed how she constantly honors her cousin’s memory through her singing, stating, “He did his mission, now I’m doing it here.”
Describing Bohdan as a kind-hearted individual with a passion for military service, Olha emphasized their close bond growing up together in Mykolaiv. Despite his youth and lack of a family of his own, Bohdan’s generosity and friendly nature left a lasting impact on those around him.
Currently residing in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, with her son, brother, and mother, Olha and her family relocated to the UK in 2022 under the Homes for Ukraine program, eventually settling in after initially staying in Berkhamsted. Joining the Songs for Ukraine choir upon her arrival, Olha expressed gratitude for the opportunity to showcase their talent in the King’s broadcast, emphasizing the importance of keeping awareness alive about the ongoing conflict.
Another choir member, Arina Koroletska, also shared her profound experience of performing at Westminster Abbey, describing it as unforgettable. The choir, comprised of individuals affected by the war, Ukrainian residents in the UK, and others, was established following Russia’s invasion in 2022. Highlighting the choir’s role in providing solace and healing through music, co-manager Katya Kuznetsova emphasized the therapeutic power of coming together to create beauty amidst turmoil.
