“Teacher Sentenced for Relationship with Student”

A teacher was visibly emotional in court as she received her sentencing for engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student while her husband was away. McKenna Kindred, now 27, had initiated contact with the student through social media, leading to explicit text exchanges in 2022.

Evidence presented in court revealed that Kindred had sent suggestive messages to the student before their physical relationship escalated. During her husband’s absence on a hunting trip, the illicit encounter took place at their home in Spokane, Washington, in November 2022, lasting for three and a half hours. Following the intimate act, they showered together and spent time together.

Their inappropriate relationship began when the student started following Kindred on Instagram in June of the same year. The discovery of their exchanges occurred when a friend of the student accessed his Instagram account and found incriminating messages, including one where Kindred expressed sadness when the student left her room.

The student disclosed to authorities that he visited Kindred’s residence in the early evening, initially engaging in physical contact while watching a movie and later moving to the bedroom.

Allegedly, Kindred shared intimate photos, including images of her breasts, with the teenager, who reciprocated with explicit videos. Their communication continued even after their sexual encounter.

Rumors about their relationship circulated within the school, with screenshots of messages being shared with officials by the student’s friends. Additional texts from Kindred indicated her desire for physical intimacy with the student.

Following her arrest, Kindred admitted to engaging in sexual misconduct with a minor and communicating inappropriately with a minor as part of a plea agreement in March 2024. Despite this, she avoided imprisonment and was sentenced to two years of probation, fined $700 (£500), and required to register as a sex offender for a decade.

Expressing remorse in court, Kindred acknowledged the distress caused by her actions, leading to the loss of her career, relationships, and trust. She highlighted the negative impact on her mental well-being and expressed deep regret for the pain inflicted on others.

Her husband supported her throughout the legal proceedings, and they relocated following her arrest, eventually purchasing a new home in Idaho. It remains uncertain if Kindred has returned to work after surrendering her teaching license amidst an investigation by the Idaho Standards Commission.
