An inquest revealed that an 84-year-old man, Robert Jobson, fatally shot his 69-year-old wife, Rosemary, at their residence in Thornton Curtis, North Lincolnshire. The couple, known for representing England in shooting competitions, were discovered deceased on July 14, 2023.
Prior to the murder, Jobson had been arrested following an assault report by his wife. Subsequently, Rosemary was shot by Jobson as she exited a vehicle outside their home. Jobson later took his own life in a shed on the property. The inquest disclosed that the couple first met while hunting and horseback riding before establishing the shooting school.
On June 20, 2023, Rosemary informed the police of her intention to divorce Jobson and expressed concerns about firearms in their residence. Guns were confiscated three days later. Jobson was arrested on July 8, released on bail the next day with orders not to contact his wife, and underwent psychiatric evaluations due to mental health issues.
The inquest detailed Jobson’s belief that his wife was involved in an affair with their mutual friend, Peter Hrynyk, who denied any romantic involvement. Rosemary had briefly stayed with Hrynyk but returned to the house to collect belongings before the tragic incident. Autopsy results confirmed fatal gunshot wounds to Rosemary’s head and neck, while Jobson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his neck.
Coroner Jayne Wilkes categorized the case as an “unlawful killing” with elements of premeditation. Rosemary’s daughter, Paula O’Donnell, disclosed her efforts to persuade her mother to leave Jobson, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. The inquest emphasized the heartbreaking nature of the events.
