“Families Navigate AI Challenges for Children’s Online Safety”

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping our daily lives, posing challenges for parents trying to stay abreast of these changes. Families are now tasked with guiding their children through a digital landscape saturated with AI, from social media interactions to school assignments and relationships, as underscored by the recent observance of Safer Internet Day.

The question arises: How can parents ensure their children’s online safety in a realm where discerning reality from falsity is complex?

In the year 2026, we have joined forces with Tesco Mobile, a sponsor of Safer Internet Day, to promote The Family Chat initiative. This initiative encourages families to engage in open discussions about smartphones and foster transparent conversations about online safety at home, aiming to alleviate the perceived challenges.

Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher, a mother to three boys aged seven, nine, and 11 alongside her husband Tom, will engage parents and children in dialogues regarding the digital issues they encounter.

In our initial family conversation, the focus is on AI and the indispensable role played by Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub in supporting parents with children of varying age groups up to 18.

Similar to numerous families, the Karleys—comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua (13), Isaac (14), and Ruby (17)—rely on their devices for connectivity. However, Anna and Emmanuel confess to grappling with understanding AI, which can hinder their ability to ensure online safety.

Anna admits, “I struggle to identify AI; there have been instances where I’ve been impressed by a picture, only for my kids to point out, ‘That’s AI, Mum!’.” Moreover, distinguishing between authentic and fabricated content is not always straightforward.

Joshua remarks, “TikTok, in particular, features abundant AI content that appears remarkably realistic.”

Homework tasks are increasingly completed online by children, often with AI-generated research—a challenge faced by both the Karleys and Giovanna.

Giovanna observes, “With my eldest in secondary school, I’ve noticed that homework is predominantly computer-based. As parents, our role is not to vilify AI’s use in homework but to continuously evaluate its appropriateness.”

Here are tips to aid parents in guiding their children on safe AI use:

1. **Explore AI Together**: Collaborating as a family in exploring AI can enhance safety and enjoyment. Engage in creating stories, artwork, or concepts collectively to understand its capabilities.

2. **AI Isn’t Infallible**: Acknowledge that AI can make errors. Encourage children to fact-check responses and inquire about the information source.

3. **Verify Age Restrictions & Privacy Settings**: Most AI tools are intended for users aged 13 and above. Emphasize using reputable platforms and reviewing privacy configurations jointly for a secure online experience.

4. **Discuss Authenticity**: Address the prevalence of deepfakes and misinformation online. Teach children how to discern genuine content and cultivate digital literacy.

5. **Utilize AI as Assistance, Not a Shortcut**: While AI can inspire creativity, it should complement, not replace, original thinking. Encourage children to prioritize critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Anna and Emmanuel appreciate having a reliable resource for guidance. Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub offers user-friendly materials and toolkits to aid parents in discussing AI with their children. This includes age-appropriate advice on communicating with kids about safe AI usage, developed in collaboration with the UK Safer Internet Centre.

Additionally, the hub features entertaining educational AI quizzes from the UK Safer Internet Centre to engage the entire family in discussions. The Karley family, already actively discussing online safety, finds the Online Safety Hub from Tesco Mobile to be a valuable tool for enhancing their conversations.

Emmanuel expresses, “We can now explore and learn together, enhancing our support for the children.”
