The severe weather event, characterized as a ‘multi-hazard,’ unleashed winds nearing 100mph, prompting a rare red warning for life-threatening winds in the South West.

As of Friday afternoon, over 40,000 properties in the South West were without electricity, with additional outages reported in the West Midlands, East Midlands, and Wales. Extreme weather conditions were noted, such as a temperature drop to minus 13.3C in Aberdeenshire and a peak wind gust of 99mph at the Isles of Scilly. Instances of storm-related damages, like fallen trees and structural impacts, were reported in different areas, underscoring the impact of Storm Goretti across the UK.

Authorities cautioned the public about the likelihood of widespread flooding in the upcoming days, with the River Ouse already breaching its banks in East Sussex. The storm’s effects were felt nationwide, with incidents of road blockages, vehicle accidents, and infrastructure damages necessitating emergency response efforts.
