Ahead of the approaching Storm Goretti in the UK, schools have made the decision to close early.
Meteo France named the storm earlier this week, characterizing it as a “multi-hazard event,” according to the Met Office. Weather experts are forecasting the potential for up to 30cm (12 inches) of snow in certain areas of England and Wales.
Various weather warnings have been issued across the UK for snow, wind, rain, and ice, with disruptions in travel and power supply anticipated. Concerns over the severe weather conditions in the South West, where winds may reach speeds of up to 100mph, have led to preemptive measures by school authorities, as reported by Cornwall Live.
A rapid drop in temperatures is expected, with the cold spell persisting through the weekend in parts of England, Wales, and Scotland, potentially causing blizzard-like conditions.
Neil Armstrong, the chief forecaster at the Met Office, stated that Storm Goretti will bring multiple hazards, primarily snow in parts of Wales and the Midlands and strong winds in the far South West. He advised people in warning areas to stay updated with forecasts and local authority messages due to the complex nature of the severe weather conditions.
The Met Office has cautioned that the storm is likely to disrupt travel by road, air, and public transport, with the additional risk of power outages. Some communities might face isolation, and mobile communication services could be impacted.
Today, as many as 96 regions are under snow warnings, with significant snowfall expected in large parts of England and Wales, particularly in the Midlands and Wales. The recent cold spell led to the closure of over 1,000 schools across the UK earlier this week.
