Greg Bovino, a key figure in the immigration crackdown under the leadership of Donald Trump, has been relieved of his duties, sources indicate.
The high-ranking Border Patrol official, known for spearheading the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement operations in various cities, including Minneapolis, has reportedly been reassigned to his previous post in California.
Following significant backlash over the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, some of Bovino’s team members are also said to be departing from Minneapolis. This move signals a notable shift in the public stance of federal law enforcement amid growing criticism. The Trump administration’s appointed “border tsar,” Tom Homan, will now take charge of the immigration crackdown efforts in the city and engage with local authorities.
In response to the incident involving the death of Alex Pretti during a federal immigration operation, the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) has launched a dedicated website to counter what state officials describe as misinformation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The website aims to provide accurate information on the processes of state custody and collaboration with federal agencies, countering statements issued by DHS.
The online platform showcases specific instances where Minnesota complied with federal requests to detain individuals facing deportation orders, contradicting claims by Trump administration officials that such individuals were routinely released. It also includes videos depicting lawful and peaceful transfers of custody from state to federal authorities, undermining allegations by federal agencies of non-cooperation by local law enforcement.
In addition to the website, the DOC released statements aimed at clarifying the criminal backgrounds of individuals referenced by federal authorities, including the individual involved in the operation near where Pretti was killed. The DOC stated that the person had never been in their custody and only had minor, dated traffic-related offenses, refuting claims by Border Patrol officials regarding a significant criminal history.
Legal expert Jimmy Gurulé, commenting on the tensions between state and federal agencies, highlighted the uncommon nature of the situation unfolding in Minnesota. He observed that disputes in large law enforcement efforts typically get resolved privately rather than through public disputes. Gurulé noted the breakdown in trust between state and federal authorities, expressing surprise at the level of discord that has led to potential legal actions.
