A tragic incident unfolded on a busy street in south London this week as a man lost his life in a collision involving a police vehicle. The unfortunate event took place around 12:35 am on South London’s main road, Borough High Street. Despite immediate assistance from the London Ambulance Service (LAS) and police officers, the man, believed to be in his 30s, succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, a portion of Borough High Street was temporarily closed off until 9 am, leading to diversions for six bus routes. However, the street has since been reopened for regular traffic. The Metropolitan Police have handed over the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for further investigation.
A Met Police spokesperson provided details of the collision, stating that a marked police vehicle was responding to an emergency call when it collided with the pedestrian. Despite efforts to administer emergency aid, the man tragically passed away at the scene. The deceased’s family has been notified, and they are receiving support from specialized officers.
Standard protocols have been followed, with the incident reported to the appropriate authorities. The IOPC has initiated an independent inquiry, with the Met Police Directorate of Professional Standards also informed about the matter. The London Ambulance Service also responded promptly to the scene, but despite their best efforts, the patient could not be saved.
The ongoing investigation and support for the IOPC’s inquiries will be facilitated by the police officers involved. Cordons remain in place at the site of the incident, causing disruptions to local traffic. The tragic outcome serves as a reminder of the risks on the streets, prompting authorities to ensure thorough investigations and necessary support for all involved parties.
