While some parents lauded the father for toughening up his son, medical professionals criticized the health risks associated with exposing such a young child to extreme cold temperatures. Ice swimming, a practice believed to have various health benefits by many Russians, even extends to infants according to local beliefs. Following the icy dip in Surgut, the child was honored with a ‘Walrus’ medal by an ice swimming club. In the video, the father proudly identifies his son as the youngest walrus at one year and four months old, named Martin, commending him for his bravery.
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, medical experts caution against subjecting young children to such extreme conditions without proper supervision and gradual acclimatization. Rita Pikhtovnikova, a Russian pediatric cardiologist, emphasized the potential dangers of exposing a one-year-old to icy water, highlighting risks to the cardiovascular system and overall health.
