Father Lowers 16-Month-Old into -30C Ice Hole

In a chilling incident captured on video, a father was seen lowering his one-year-old child into a freezing -30C ice hole in Siberia. The footage, widely shared on Russian social media, features Radmir Gaysarov, 31, carrying out the daring act with his 16-month-old toddler.

While some parents lauded the father for toughening up his son, medical professionals criticized the health risks associated with exposing such a young child to extreme cold temperatures. The incident occurred in harsh weather conditions with air temperatures reaching -30C and the water just above freezing point.

Ice swimming, a practice believed to have various health benefits by many Russians, even extends to infants according to local beliefs. Comments on the video expressed approval, with one father endorsing the act as a way to strengthen children and a mother expressing interest in introducing similar training to her child.

Following the icy dip in Surgut, the child was honored with a ‘Walrus’ medal by an ice swimming club. In the video, the father proudly identifies his son as the youngest walrus at one year and four months old, named Martin, commending him for his bravery.

Despite the celebratory atmosphere, medical experts caution against subjecting young children to such extreme conditions without proper supervision and gradual acclimatization. Rita Pikhtovnikova, a Russian pediatric cardiologist, emphasized the potential dangers of exposing a one-year-old to icy water, highlighting risks to the cardiovascular system and overall health.

In adherence to health guidelines, any ice immersion activities should be conducted under medical supervision and in properly prepared ice holes. Dr. Galina Slobodina, a general practitioner, stressed that infants should not undergo cold hardening practices, leaving the responsibility and potential consequences on the parents’ conscience.
