Iranian Police Accused of Targeting Protesters’ Eyes

Disturbing reports have surfaced from Iran, where witnesses allege that police are deliberately targeting the eyes of protesters. Widespread turmoil is unfolding in the nation, particularly in Tehran, marking the most significant nationwide protest against the Islamic Republic in more than three years. Rising economic challenges have fueled tensions in Iran, reaching a critical juncture when the Iranian rial drastically devalued against the US dollar in late December.

On December 28, merchants gathered at Tehran’s central bazaar to voice their grievances, sparking demonstrations that quickly spread beyond the capital. Tragically, the death toll is said to have surpassed 500 as authorities employ forceful tactics to suppress the escalating unrest, which shows no signs of abating.

An internet blackout has been enforced to conceal the grave human rights abuses during the crackdown on demonstrations, as denounced by Amnesty International. Despite efforts to stifle information, harrowing accounts continue to emerge from Iranian communities, shedding light on the dire situations faced by protestors.

Describing the chaotic scenes, a 25-year-old artist named Maryam, who participated in Tehran protests on January 9, expressed her fear of the violent police actions, including deliberate eye-targeting. In a separate interview with Time, a resident of Tehran’s Niavaran neighborhood corroborated reports of severe eye injuries, emphasizing the devastating impact on the community.

Opposition groups based in the UK informed media outlets of officers firing at protesters, leading to overwhelming casualties in hospitals. Reports indicate that police have resorted to lethal measures, causing widespread devastation among demonstrators. Human Rights Activists News Agency based in the US reported at least 500 fatalities and 10,000 arrests, mainly attributed to live ammunition and close-range gunfire.

Global leaders and human rights advocates worldwide have condemned the Iranian police’s actions, with France, Germany, and the UK jointly criticizing the violence and calling for the protection of citizens’ rights to free expression and peaceful assembly.
