“US Urges Citizens to Leave Iran Amid Escalating Violence”

American citizens are advised to depart from Iran as concerns grow over potential escalation of violence in the country. According to the US Virtual Embassy for Iran website, ongoing protests in Iran are intensifying and have the potential to become violent, leading to arrests and injuries. The situation is characterized by increased security measures, road closures, disruptions in public transportation, and internet blockages. The Iranian government has imposed restrictions on mobile, landline, and national internet networks. Several airlines have either limited or canceled flights to and from Iran, with some suspending services until January 16.

The website urges US citizens to leave Iran immediately and make departure plans that do not rely on US government assistance. In case leaving is not feasible, individuals are advised to secure themselves in a safe location within their residence or another secure building and stock up on essential supplies such as food, water, and medications. It is recommended to avoid participating in demonstrations, maintain a low profile, stay vigilant, monitor local news, be prepared to adjust plans, keep phones charged, stay in touch with family and friends, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updated security information in Iran.

President Donald Trump’s recent remarks indicated Iran’s willingness to engage in negotiations with the US following his threat to take action against the country over its handling of nationwide protests, which activists report have resulted in at least 599 deaths. The response from Iran to Trump’s comments remains undisclosed, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi attributed the violence to Israel and the US without providing concrete evidence. Araghchi emphasized Iran’s openness to diplomatic discussions, stressing the importance of mutual interests and concerns in any potential talks with the US.

In a counteraction, supporters of the theocracy flooded the streets in a display of solidarity with the Iranian government. The pro-government demonstrators, numbering in the tens of thousands, denounced the US and Israel with chants of “Death to America!” and “Death to Israel!” Additionally, Iran’s attorney general issued a warning declaring participation in protests as an act punishable by death, labeling individuals as “enemies of God.”
