A recently declassified photograph reveals a British submarine encountering the Russian spy vessel Yantar. This event follows Defense Secretary John Healey’s disclosure in November that the Yantar had targeted RAF pilots with lasers while operating near UK waters. He condemned Russia’s actions, highlighting the ship’s role in intelligence gathering and mapping undersea cables.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) released an image showing a Royal Navy submarine and helicopter confronting the Russian vessel. In a separate incident in November 2024, RAF maritime patrol aircraft, along with HMS Cattistock, HMS Tyne, and RFA Proteus, were deployed to monitor Yantar’s activities closely.
During a parliamentary session in January, Mr. Healey mentioned authorizing a Royal Navy submarine to surface near the Yantar as a deterrent measure. This move aimed to demonstrate covert surveillance of the vessel’s movements. Subsequently, the Yantar left UK waters and sailed towards the Mediterranean.
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson emphasized the UK’s vigilance against Russian threats, including intelligence-gathering activities targeting undersea infrastructure. The government’s proactive measures involve imposing sanctions, monitoring Russian vessels near UK waters, and advancing anti-submarine technology. The Atlantic Bastion program signifies the UK’s commitment to modernizing naval defenses to protect critical undersea assets.
Mr. Healey underscored the Yantar’s presence as a sign of the increasing Russian threat, emphasizing the need for surveillance and response. The government’s previous actions, such as deploying a nuclear-powered attack submarine near the Yantar, aimed to demonstrate awareness and readiness. The Russian embassy criticized the UK government, accusing it of fostering anti-Russian sentiments and militaristic tensions.
