“UK Networks Phase Out 3G Service for Faster 4G and 5G”

In a noticeable shift, the UK is phasing out its 3G service to make way for faster and more dependable 4G and 5G connections. Major networks like EE, Vodafone, and now O2 have already discontinued their 3G service. While most users won’t be affected due to their devices using newer technologies, some older and more vulnerable individuals may experience disruptions if they haven’t upgraded their phones.

Recognizing the potential impact, Virgin Media O2 has partnered with Age UK to raise awareness about the 3G network shutdown. Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, emphasized the importance of supporting those affected by the transition.

O2 plans to fully shut down its 3G signal by the year’s end, affecting users with non-4G or 5G compatible devices, restricting access to services like WhatsApp. The network has already initiated the closure in select locations, with more areas scheduled for the transition before the year concludes.

To assist older mobile phone users in upgrading their devices, Virgin Media O2 and Age UK are collaborating to provide additional support and informative content. Age UK will offer in-person awareness sessions for disadvantaged older individuals.

Customers without 4G or 5G handsets will be notified directly by Virgin Media O2 and offered free compatible devices for vulnerable users, along with discounts for others. Phones with only 3G connectivity will still be able to make voice calls and send text messages through 2G networks post the 3G switch-off.

Virgin Media O2 reassures that the impact of this change will be minimal, as the 3G network carries less than 2% of total data traffic. For those seeking guidance, Age UK’s Advice Line or contacting their service provider for information on available options is recommended.
