Users of VoIP can enjoy improved call quality, more dependable connections, and additional features like spam call protection and call forwarding options. Despite the long-planned nature of this transition, many individuals seem unaware of the impending switch.
According to a recent report by the telecommunications team at Phonely, 58.7% of UK adults over 50 are unaware of the upcoming discontinuation of traditional landlines, despite industry alerts and the extended deadline of January 31, 2027. This lack of awareness could lead to a last-minute rush for upgrades in 2026, potentially causing issues such as equipment shortages, delays in installations, and increased pressure on telecom providers.
Speaking on this matter, Phonely emphasized the need for awareness, stating that waiting until the last moment could result in chaotic circumstances. As the 2027 deadline approaches, experts suggest that delaying the switch may not be wise.
Bryn Thompson, Director at Phonely, expressed concerns about the false sense of security created by the deadline extension. He highlighted the risk of chaos if the majority of individuals delay the transition until they are compelled to move over to the new system.
Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich, underscored the importance of understanding the changes and preparing for them, particularly for older individuals who rely on landlines for social connections and safety. He advised contacting telephone providers to explore options for the switch and ensuring that any specific needs, like telecare alarms, are considered.
The shift from traditional landlines to digital VoIP services involves retiring the UK’s copper-based PSTN network. After January 31, 2027, traditional landlines will cease to function, and calls will be routed through broadband connections instead.
While younger households have largely transitioned to mobile phones, many individuals over 50, especially those in rural areas, continue to rely on landlines for everyday communication, emergencies, and telecare services. In some regions, landlines remain the most reliable means of staying connected.
Telephone providers are expected to communicate directly with customers about the switch, detailing the necessary steps. The transition itself should not incur extra costs, as households will primarily need a broadband connection and a compatible phone for the new system.
