A climber faced a tragic fate when he found himself just beyond reach of his rescuers, uttering his final words in a chilling moment. Toni Kurz, born in 1913 in Berchtesgaden, was deeply influenced by the Bavarian mountains since childhood, leading him to pursue climbing as a profession. His skills were honed early on during his apprenticeship as a metalworker at sixteen, which later served him well when he joined the elite German mountain infantry in 1934.
Teaming up with Andreas Hinterstoisser, Kurz embarked on daring explorations through the Alps, uncovering new paths that are still popular today. At 23, the duo, along with Willy Angerer and Edi Rainer, took on a monumental challenge – the North Face of the Eiger, a treacherous wall known as ‘Die Mordwand.’ Despite their experience, they lacked proper equipment and were met with adverse weather conditions, including collapsing icefields and stormy winds.
Following a fatal misstep that led to the deaths of Angerer, Hinterstoisser, and Rainer, Kurz was left clinging to the wall as his only hope. Villagers alerted Swiss guides Christian Almer Jr. and Hans Schlunegger, who attempted a risky rescue. Kurz, battling hypothermia, struggled to descend but tragically fell short of reaching safety, eventually succumbing to his dire circumstances after two days.
This harrowing incident left a lasting impact, inspiring literary works and memorializing the climbers with notable features on the mountain.
