In a harrowing ordeal, a courageous individual fought off sharks for an extended period while a group of US naval sailors awaited rescue in the Pacific Ocean after their ship sank abruptly. On July 26, 1945, Harlan Twible, aboard the USS Indianapolis or “Indy,” unknowingly transported crucial components of the world’s first nuclear weapon to scientists on Tinian. Following this seemingly uneventful mission to Guam, Twible, then 23, faced a sudden attack when Japanese torpedoes from the submarine I-58 struck the Indy, causing it to sink rapidly.
Twible, witnessing the chaos onboard, took charge and initiated the evacuation, saving numerous lives before launching himself into the water as the ship went down in just 12 minutes, claiming the lives of 300 crew members. Despite the tragic loss, approximately 900 survivors endured, encountering a new threat as they found themselves surrounded by sharks in the open sea.
Facing fear and uncertainty, the crew, mostly young individuals, banded together as their numbers dwindled, with only 325 survivors remaining by morning. Twible’s primary concern was the well-being of his comrades, as they grappled with the constant presence of predatory sharks. Struggling to maintain hope, Twible and his group valiantly defended themselves against shark attacks, implementing “shark watches” to enhance their chances of survival.
In a desperate bid for survival, Twible resorted to pushing deceased crew members off floating debris to deter the sharks and motivate the remaining survivors. After enduring four grueling days and five nights, a US Navy aircraft spotted the survivors, leading to the rescue of 316 individuals, marking a tragic chapter in US Naval history.
