Sky and Humax Introduce Rival Set-Top Boxes

Sky Q, known for its exceptional features, is a highly acclaimed set-top box. Renowned for its live TV recording capabilities, access to premium channels, on-demand content, and popular streaming apps like Disney+ and Netflix, Sky is now emphasizing internet-based products such as the Sky Stream box and Sky Glass TV. This shift hints at a potential rival entering the market as Sky moves away from its traditional satellite-powered platform.

Humax has introduced a new device named the Aura EZ 4K TV Recorder, which closely resembles Sky Q in functionality. Sporting a 2TB built-in hard drive, similar to Sky’s flagship product, it offers ample storage for TV programs, movies, and sports events. The inclusion of internal storage is significant in a time where physical recording options are becoming scarcer.

The Aura EZ’s capabilities extend beyond aerial recordings; it operates on Freely technology, enabling live TV streaming over broadband. Developed by the creators of Freeview, Freely provides access to over 60 live channels and a vast library of on-demand content. This feature facilitates easy relocation of the device, straightforward installation, and frequent updates to enhance user experience.

Boasting 4K HDR picture quality, Dolby Digital Plus audio, and an integrated TV guide showcasing current and upcoming programs, the Aura EZ offers a comprehensive entertainment experience. Users can remotely control the device through the Humax Aura EZ smartphone app, allowing for schedule browsing and recording management from anywhere.

Although Freely may not match Sky’s premium sports and movie offerings, it stands out for its free usage with no subscription fees.

The Humax Aura EZ is scheduled for a UK launch in February 2026 at a retail price of £249.

In a related development, Sky has announced a new subscription package that combines several major streaming services at a reduced monthly cost. Priced at £24 per month, customers gain access to Disney+, Netflix, Hayu, and the upcoming HBO Max service.

Sky’s bundled offering provides great value by consolidating multiple streaming platforms under a single subscription. Subscribers to the Ultimate TV plan also receive over 130 premium channels, including Sky Comedy, Sky Documentaries, Sky Crime, and Sky History.

Moreover, Sky Cinema customers will enjoy a new Disney movie channel directly integrated into the TV guide.

The £24 bundle includes:

– Netflix Standard with Ads
– Disney+ Standard with Ads (starting in March)
– HBO Max Basic with Ads (beginning March 26)
– Hayu (available in July, with select content accessible from March)
– Over 130 Sky channels
