Pret A Manger is gearing up to launch its first drive-thru in the UK, aiming to compete with established coffee giants like Costa and Starbucks who have already ventured into this concept in previous years. Pano Christou, the chain’s leader, revealed plans to expand into more locations at motorway services and airports, eyeing a potential of 300 to 400 travel-focused Pret outlets in the future.
The inaugural Pret drive-thru is expected to debut in the first quarter of 2026, with the exact location yet to be finalized but likely to be situated at a motorway service area. Christou expressed enthusiasm about the unique appeal of Pret’s fresh product offerings compared to competitors, indicating a strategic move towards drive-thru establishments.
While further specifics are pending, Pret’s foray into drive-thru sites will align it with major coffee players like Starbucks and Costa, which have established numerous drive-thrus across the UK. Starbucks introduced its first UK drive-thru in Cardiff in 2008, followed by Costa in Nottingham in 2011, each expanding to over 300 drive-thru locations countrywide.
Having originated in London in 1986, Pret has grown to over 700 outlets spanning 21 countries. In addition to drive-thrus, Pret is also exploring meal deals, aiming to introduce trials by year-end. Supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsbury’s have long offered meal deals, but recent inflation has prompted price hikes on these lunch options.
Christou noted the evolving customer base of Pret, emphasizing the brand’s broader appeal and accessibility. Recounting his journey from assistant manager to leading the chain, Christou highlighted the brand’s evolution over the years.
