A man aged 59 has passed away following an encounter with law enforcement officers. The incident occurred just before 12:24 pm on Monday, January 5, when Merseyside Police detained the man on Southport Road in Bootle, Merseyside. During the interaction, the man collapsed and lost consciousness. Despite receiving CPR from the officers and an ambulance being called, the man was pronounced dead at the hospital an hour later.
Merseyside Police has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and has notified the man’s next of kin. The police department expressed its sympathies to the man’s family. At the scene on Southport Road, officers and paramedics cordoned off an area heading southbound from Aintree Road to Breeze Hill as they responded to the situation.
According to reports from the Liverpool Echo, witnesses observed the man receiving CPR on a driveway before being transported to the hospital. Detectives were seen entering and exiting a house in the area, and armed police were also present.
Residents recounted seeing a significant police presence, multiple ambulances, and paramedic bags left on the driveway. Forensic officers later arrived at the scene, and the road remains closed as the investigation continues.
