A tragedy struck a British couple on a luxury family trip to the Canary Islands when the husband succumbed to salmonella, leaving his wife heartbroken. Leslie Green, celebrating his 70th birthday at the four-star Occidental Jandia Playa resort in Fuerteventura, fell seriously ill during the second week of their £2,300 holiday. His health deteriorated rapidly, leading to hospitalization and subsequent complications such as sepsis and kidney failure, ultimately resulting in his passing about four weeks later.
Julie, Leslie’s wife of 38 years, also fell seriously ill with salmonella, spending a week in the hospital after her husband’s illness began on the day of her 60th birthday. Concerns arose regarding the quality of the food they consumed at the resort, with suspicions about lukewarm carbonara sauce and undercooked chicken. Allegations were made about poor food handling practices, including the mixing of freshly cooked food with items left out.
Julie, a retired NHS assistant nurse, expressed profound sadness over the unexpected turn of events during what was meant to be a celebratory vacation. She recounted the harrowing experience of watching Leslie’s health decline in the hospital and the pain of losing him. Leslie, a kind and family-oriented man with a passion for fishkeeping and sports, including darts and pool, had his life cut short, leaving Julie with a sense of loss and unanswered questions about their future plans in retirement.
The couple’s holiday took a tragic turn when Leslie fell ill with symptoms of salmonella, leading to his hospitalization and subsequent complications. Despite testing positive for salmonella, Leslie’s health continued to deteriorate, eventually resulting in his passing at the age of 70. His wife, Julie, also suffered from the same illness, adding to the family’s distress during their vacation.
In light of these events, legal action has been initiated to investigate the circumstances surrounding Leslie’s death and Julie’s illness. The family, including their daughters and grandchild, were deeply affected by the tragic outcome of what was supposed to be a joyous holiday celebration. Additional concerns were raised by another guest at the resort, Michaela Smith, who also fell ill with salmonella around the same time.
Jennifer Hodgson, the legal representative for Julie, emphasized the seriousness of the situation and the need for thorough investigations to provide the affected parties with answers and support. Holidaymakers planning to visit the resort in the future were advised to exercise caution, considering the risks associated with foodborne illnesses. Efforts are underway to address any identified issues and mitigate the potential health hazards for future guests at the resort.
