“Keir Starmer Condemns Violence in Iran, Calls for Restraint”

Keir Starmer has denounced the violence against protesters in Iran and called on Tehran to show restraint in response to ongoing demonstrations against the government. Reports indicate that at least 62 people have been killed and 2,300 individuals have been detained during weeks of protests triggered by economic grievances.

In a joint statement with the leaders of France and Germany, the Prime Minister expressed deep concern over the use of force by Iranian security forces and strongly condemned the killing of demonstrators. The leaders emphasized the importance of protecting the Iranian population’s rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly without fear of retaliation.

The recent wave of unrest began with small-scale protests related to economic issues, which escalated into a significant challenge to the ruling theocracy. Nationwide protests gained momentum following a call for demonstrations by exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, leading to mass gatherings and anti-regime chants in central Tehran.

The Iranian authorities responded to the protests by imposing a complete internet blackout and announcing a decisive crackdown, resulting in numerous detentions and fatalities. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused the protesters of aligning with the United States, while dismissing US intervention threats as supporters rallied against America.

Iran has a history of strict governance and repression, enforcing limitations on freedom of expression and imposing social constraints on its citizens. The escalating protests have reignited calls for international recognition of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

Human rights experts have urged democratic governments to support the Iranian people’s quest for a free and democratic republic, emphasizing the need for concrete actions beyond verbal condemnations. The current situation in Iran underscores the ongoing struggle for fundamental rights and democracy within the country.
