Far North Queensland in Australia, known for its stunning white sandy beaches and lush rainforest-covered mountains, was a haven for 24-year-old Toyah Cordingley. Embracing her love for nature, she enjoyed outdoor activities like swimming in waterfalls and strolling along the picturesque coastline with her cherished canine companion, Indie.
Working at the Paws and Claws shelter in Port Douglas, Toyah devoted her time to caring for animals in need of homes, showcasing her ability to comfort even the most timid creatures. Her passion extended to a health food and pharmacy store where she was a beloved employee, admired by customers. With a boyfriend named Marco and eagerly anticipating her role as a bridesmaid at her best friend’s wedding, Toyah radiated positivity and excitement for the future.
Tragically, on a sunny Sunday afternoon in October 2018, after a visit to Rusty’s Market in Cairns, Toyah headed to Wangetti Beach, just 40km north, to walk Indie. Despite the presence of other beachgoers and dog walkers, Toyah never returned from her outing. Concerned about her absence, Marco alerted her family who discovered her abandoned car at the beach. A search led to the heartbreaking discovery of Toyah’s lifeless body under a tree, with Indie found tied tightly nearby.
An autopsy revealed Toyah had suffered over 26 stab wounds, ultimately succumbing to her injuries. The community was left in shock and grief, rallying around Toyah’s memory with tributes and support. Despite extensive investigations and forensic testing, including a significant DNA match, the killer eluded capture initially.
Years later, in late 2022, a substantial reward prompted a breakthrough, leading authorities to apprehend Rajwinder Singh in India. Singh, who denied the murder allegations, agreed to extradition for trial in Australia. Following a lengthy legal process, Singh was convicted of Toyah’s murder after a retrial, receiving a life sentence with a 25-year minimum term.
Through the ordeal, Toyah’s family shared their profound loss and pain, emphasizing the lasting impact of her tragic death. The court highlighted the heinous nature of the crime, suggesting a likely opportunistic motive. Singh, deemed a coward by the judge, faced the consequences of his actions, leaving behind a shattered family and a community committed to honoring Toyah’s memory.
As Toyah’s legacy endures, her community continues to pay tribute to her through various gestures, ensuring that she will always be remembered and cherished.
