Jockeys Injured in York Horse Racing Accident

The major gathering on Sunday at York faced a delay following a serious incident during the main race of the day. Jockeys Jim Crowley and Trevor Whelan received on-track medical attention after a harrowing fall disrupted the event. Subsequently, both jockeys were conscious as they were transported to a hospital in Leeds for further evaluation.

The horses, Almeraq and Tiger Bay, engaged in the incident, seemed unharmed as they walked away from the mishap on the Knavesmire. Almeraq, ridden by Crowley and a top contender for the 4.30 race, the Sky Bet Starman Garrowby Stakes, stumbled with a competitor, leading to the fall about two furlongs from the race’s conclusion. Trained by William Haggas, Almeraq brought down Tiger Bay, ridden by Whelan in the unfortunate incident.

The ongoing Sky Bet Sunday Series meeting is currently being broadcast live on ITV4. Presenter Oli Bell later updated ITV viewers, stating, “The jockeys are conscious and are being transferred to Leeds General Infirmary. We understand they have both sustained leg injuries. Thankfully, both jockeys are alert and in communication with the medical team, which is a considerable relief. The atmosphere at York was tense for the past 15 minutes, but this positive news has eased the tension. Our thoughts remain with Jim and Trevor.”

The subsequent race at 5:00 PM faced a delay of nearly thirty minutes before the event resumed.
