Jesy Nelson Advocates for SMA Screening

Jesy Nelson expressed her determination to fight after revealing her plans following her twins’ diagnosis with SMA Type 1. The former Little Mix star, 34, received overwhelming support after sharing that her twin babies, Ocean and Story, born in May, have been diagnosed with the rare genetic condition that causes muscle weakness and can be fatal if untreated.

In response to the heartbreaking news that her daughters may never walk, Jesy announced her intention to launch a petition advocating for universal newborn screening for spinal muscular atrophy using a heel prick test. Early detection of SMA significantly improves outcomes, potentially saving lives. While the NHS currently offers a heel prick test for nine serious conditions at 5 days old, SMA screening is not included. NHS Scotland plans to incorporate SMA screening by 2026, but NHS England has not yet made similar announcements.

During an Instagram story, Jesy thanked everyone for the outpouring of support and shared her determination to push for SMA screening in newborns. She emphasized the importance of early detection and the potential impact on affected individuals. Jesy also mentioned her upcoming appearance on This Morning to discuss her experience with her daughters’ SMA Type 1 diagnosis.

In her initial announcement, Jesy described SMA Type 1 as the most severe muscular disease for infants, stating that her twins would be disabled. She highlighted the critical need for early warning signs awareness and the value of timely medical intervention. Despite initial dismissal of concerns raised about her twins’ health, Jesy hopes her advocacy efforts will prevent similar experiences for other families.

Through her platform, Jesy aims to raise awareness about SMA and encourage proactive healthcare practices to prevent delays in diagnosis and treatment. She shared her personal journey navigating the challenges of premature birth and the importance of trusting parental instincts in seeking medical attention promptly.
