Jessica Pegula, known for being one of the wealthiest tennis stars globally, has suggested that Andy Murray might have taken on the role as Novak Djokovic’s coach out of sheer curiosity. After retiring from professional tennis in the summer of 2024, Murray surprised the tennis community by announcing his decision to coach the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
The collaboration between the two icons began before the Australian Open, where Djokovic reached the semi-finals but had to withdraw due to an injury. In May, it was confirmed that their coaching partnership had ended mutually after just six months.
During an episode of The Players Box podcast with Jennifer Brady, Desirae Krawczyk, and Madison Keys, Pegula, whose net worth is nearly £15 million with a potential inheritance of £5.5 billion, suggested that Murray may have been intrigued by the opportunity to gain insights into Djokovic’s mindset.
Pegula remarked, “I believe he was genuinely interested in understanding how Djokovic thinks and operates on the court. Witnessing their interactions during events like the Australian Open was quite fascinating.”
Keys supported Pegula’s viewpoint, stating that the collaboration between Murray and Djokovic was unprecedented, offering a rare chance to delve into Djokovic’s competitive strategies.
Despite their parting, both Murray and Djokovic have shared their perspectives on their coaching relationship. Murray revealed that he saw coaching Djokovic as a unique opportunity that he decided to explore despite initially enjoying his time at home. Djokovic acknowledged the end of their partnership, emphasizing the mutual agreement to conclude their coaching arrangement.
Djokovic expressed gratitude for the experience, acknowledging Murray’s tennis intelligence and insight. He mentioned that although their collaboration did not yield the desired results, he valued the learnings and discussions they had during their time together.
