“Iranian Flag Protests Spread: London Demo, Social Media Movement”

The flag of Iran has sparked protests globally, with a demonstrator in London scaling the embassy balcony to remove the flag symbolizing the oppressive regime. On the social media platform X, the official flag of the Islamic Republic was replaced with the pre-1979 revolution flag, known as the “Lion-and-Sun” emblem, which has re-emerged as a symbol of protest in Iran.

This change on X was prompted by a user’s request to change the Iranian flag emoji, leading to the reinstatement of the historical symbol across the platform, including accounts associated with the Iranian government. Initially, the Iranian official accounts displayed the protest flag but later removed it altogether.

In a separate incident in London, a protester removed the Iranian flag from the embassy during an anti-regime rally, attended by an estimated 500 to 1,000 people. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed support for those speaking out against the Iranian government, emphasizing the importance of upholding fundamental rights like free speech and peaceful assembly without fear of violence or retaliation.

Cooper stressed the need for authoritarian regimes like Iran to respect these rights, citing a joint statement by the UK, France, and Germany urging Iranian authorities to heed the calls for change.
