Historic UK Shoe Retailer Robin Elt Closes Worcester Store

After serving customers for 153 years, a historic shoe retailer in the UK is closing one of its high street stores. Robin Elt Shoes in Worcester, established in 1872, will permanently shut its doors on January 10, 2026. Despite this closure, the retailer’s other branches in Hereford, Ludlow, Malvern, Leominster, and Totnes will continue operating.

Jenny Elt, the managing director, expressed deep sadness about the closure of the family-owned business, citing financial challenges as the reason behind the decision. Elt stated that sustaining the store in its current location was no longer feasible for the future, emphasizing the impossibility of generating revenue out of thin air.

In response to the closure, a spokesperson for Worcester City Council acknowledged the shift towards online shopping and the transformation of town centers into hubs for leisure and entertainment. The council, in collaboration with Worcestershire County Council, Worcester BID, and other stakeholders, has been actively supporting local traders to adapt to these changes.

With a blend of popular high street brands and independent retailers, Worcester boasts a unique shopping experience. The council highlighted its commitment to this model and its efforts in enhancing the city center, including significant investments in public spaces like the Shambles.

In related news, the charity shop chain Scope has closed three additional high street branches in Morden, Torquay, and Washington. This move aligns with the charity’s plan to shut down a total of 77 shops this year due to financial projections. Scope, facing a forecasted loss of £1.5 million, initiated consultations earlier this year, potentially impacting around 200 retail staff and 2,000 volunteers.

Debbie Boylen, Scope’s head of retail, expressed regret over the closures, emphasizing the vital role the shops played in supporting disabled individuals and their families. Following consultations with colleagues and volunteers, the decision to close the Morden, Torquay, and Washington shops on December 6 was finalized.
