“Government Sets Deadline for Covid Fund Return”

Suspected individuals involved in Covid-related fraud and those who improperly received government funds have been given a 48-hour ultimatum to return the money or face stricter consequences. The voluntary repayment window for funds acquired through pandemic relief programs will close just before midnight on December 31, allowing recipients to return support they weren’t entitled to during the health crisis.

The schemes in question include initiatives like furlough, bounce-back loans, business grants, and the Eat Out to Help Out program, established under former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Failure to comply with the repayment deadline may result in hefty fines up to 100%, along with potential interests and penalties. In severe cases involving suspected fraud or intentional misuse, legal action and even imprisonment could be pursued against the offenders.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves emphasized the importance of returning wrongly claimed funds, stressing that the money rightfully belongs to the community, including essential services like the NHS and schools. Counter-fraud commissioner Tom Hayhoe urged individuals to take advantage of the voluntary repayment window to rectify their actions and avoid possible legal repercussions.

The government’s Covid fraud reporting hotline has already received 300 allegations totaling £35 million, prompting the establishment of a new fraud investigation team in the upcoming year. Recent findings by Mr. Hayhoe revealed that £10.9 billion was lost to fraudulent activities during the pandemic, with only £1.8 billion successfully recovered. Despite challenges in recouping the full amount, efforts to recover misappropriated funds will persist.

Mr. Hayhoe criticized the previous government for overlooking fraud risks while focusing on containing the virus’s spread. Ongoing efforts to investigate and address fraudulent activities remain crucial as authorities work towards ensuring accountability and safeguarding public funds.
