An adventurer who has been journeying across the globe for nearly thirty years is making his way back to Hull, his hometown, after starting his ambitious trek in 1998. Karl Bushby, a former paratrooper, set out to achieve the remarkable feat of walking an uninterrupted path around the world, initially estimating it would take him 12 years to complete. However, after encountering challenges such as navigating through a jungle infested with crocodiles and anacondas and spending 57 days in a Russian prison, he is finally returning home.
Throughout his 36,000-mile expedition, Bushby has faced numerous adversities including theft, detainment, deportation, animal bites, starvation, and near-drowning incidents. What began as a spontaneous wager in a bar led to the launch of his epic journey with a custom-made trolley in tow. Now, at 56 years old, he has announced his decision to head back to Hull, with plans to reach the city by September.
Reflecting on his departure from Hull in 1998, Bushby expressed his emotional connection to the city and his memories of starting his global voyage. Recounting some of the most perilous moments of his expedition, he highlighted his encounters with dangerous situations, including navigating the treacherous Darién Gap that separates Central and South America. This 60-mile passage is known for its rugged terrain, extreme weather conditions, and various hazards such as crocodiles, snakes, and criminal activities.
Additionally, Bushby recounted his harrowing experience crossing the Bering Strait, where he came face to face with a polar bear, emphasizing the unforgiving nature of the environment.
