Father Sentenced to 30 Years for Daughter’s Honor Killing

A father has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for tying up and drowning his teenage daughter in an honor killing. Khaled al Najjar, 53, fled the Netherlands after his 18-year-old daughter Ryan’s body was discovered in an isolated nature reserve near Amsterdam. His two sons, Mohamed, 23, and Muhanad, 25, were also found guilty in connection with their sister’s death and each received a 20-year sentence.

The court revealed that Ryan was taken by her brothers from a friend’s house under the guise of protection from their father’s anger. However, the brothers were actually following Khaled’s instructions to take Ryan to deep water, weigh down her body, and leave her to perish. Muhanad attended the court proceedings while both brothers had previously denied involvement in the crime.

Khaled’s sentence exceeded the Dutch prosecutors’ recommendation and is the maximum penalty for a single murder conviction in the Netherlands. Despite the verdict, Khaled remains at large in Syria, evading extradition due to the lack of a treaty between the countries.

The family had admonished Ryan for her “Western behavior,” deeming it disgraceful. The judge expressed disbelief at a father’s act of killing his daughter, emphasizing Khaled’s lack of accountability despite his claims of honor.

Prosecutors revealed that Muhanad witnessed his father’s fatal actions towards Ryan, who was suffocated, bound, and drowned in a nature reserve. DNA and phone records linked both Khaled and Muhanad to the crime, illustrating Ryan’s vulnerability against the three men. Mohamed, the younger sibling, played a role in her death by staying with the vehicles used in the crime.

During the trial, it emerged that Khaled and his sons focused on concealing Ryan’s disappearance and avoiding detection. Investigators noted the brothers’ deliberate avoidance of contacting Ryan, indicating awareness of her fate.

Khaled initially denied his sons’ involvement in Ryan’s murder, but the judge dismissed this defense, suspecting Khaled of shielding his sons from accountability from a distant location.
