Family of Hunger-Striking UK Inmate Urges Govt Action

The family of a hunger striker who is currently imprisoned is expressing deep concern and urgency as they appeal to the government for assistance. Kamran Ahmed, a 28-year-old individual from London, has been refusing food for 44 days in solidarity with Palestine. Facing allegations of breaking into a UK site belonging to an Israeli defense company, he has been in custody at HMP Pentonville for seven months.

Ahmed’s health deteriorated significantly during the hunger strike, leading to his hospitalization. Despite experiencing severe chest pains, tremors, and slurred speech, he remains resolute in his commitment, stating that sacrificing his life for his cause would be worthwhile. The hunger strikers, including Ahmed, have taken legal action against Justice Secretary David Lammy and the government for alleged negligence in upholding prison safety policies.

In response to these claims, a Ministry of Justice spokesperson has denied any wrongdoing, emphasizing the importance of providing support to the prisoners to prevent further endangerment through hunger strikes. Kamran’s family, particularly his sister Shahmina, has been vocal in their pleas for intervention and compassion from the authorities.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has defended the government’s adherence to established procedures in handling hunger strikes within the prison system. Lord Timpson, the Prisons minister, highlighted the existing protocols to ensure prisoner safety and access to necessary healthcare services.

As the situation unfolds, Kamran’s family remains anxious about his deteriorating health and lack of communication regarding his well-being. Their concerns extend to the potential consequences of his continued detention on his physical and mental well-being. Despite the ongoing legal complexities, the family is calling for empathy and humane treatment for all hunger strikers involved in the protest.
