“Europe Battles Storms Elli and Goretti: Grave Digging Ban in Germany”

Amidst the icy grip of Storm Goretti in the UK, Europe is facing its own challenge with Storm Elli unleashing harsh weather conditions across the continent. In Germany, where temperatures are set to plummet to -30 degrees, officials in Hamburg have enforced a burial ban due to frozen ground rendering grave digging nearly impossible, causing delays in funeral arrangements.

The severe weather conditions have not only disrupted transportation networks nationwide in Germany but also led to the cancellation of the Christian Democrat Union (CDU) political party’s first major gathering of the year. The party cited severe weather warnings, associated dangers, and transportation cancellations as reasons for canceling their annual kick-off meeting.

The German national meteorological service, DWD, issued a warning predicting fresh snowfall in regions like Bavaria. They forecasted new snowfalls of up to 15 centimeters within a short timeframe, affecting various parts of the country.

While Germany and France are being battered by strong winds and snow from Storm Elli, the UK is experiencing the impact of Storm Goretti. The Met Office has warned of the possibility of more wintry weather following a brief respite on Saturday.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Steve Willington cautioned that snowfall is expected in parts of Scotland and northern England on Sunday, with accumulations of 2-5cm at lower levels and up to 10-20cm over higher ground. The forecast also includes rain for central and southern England and Wales, adding to the disruption caused by the ongoing severe weather conditions.
