“Downing Street Rebukes Farage over Trail Hunting Criticism”

Downing Street has rebuked Nigel Farage for criticizing ministers as “authoritarian control freaks” due to their proposal to outlaw trail hunting. Trail hunting involves a predetermined scent for the hunt to follow, as a substitute for the banned fox hunting initiated by the Labour Party in 2004.

Campaigners have consistently highlighted concerns that foxes are still subjected to harm by dogs during hunts, while law enforcement has pointed out that trail hunting is often a cover for illegal fox hunting. Labour has pledged to prohibit this practice as part of its Animal Welfare Strategy unveiled recently, drawing criticism from the Conservatives and Reform UK.

Mr. Farage, known for participating in Boxing Day hunts, condemned the government’s move, labeling it as an attack on rural traditions. However, Downing Street refuted the accusation of being “control freaks,” emphasizing their commitment to fulfilling manifesto promises.

Animal rights activists have applauded Labour’s comprehensive Animal Welfare Strategy, including the ban on trail hunting, but have raised concerns about the lack of specific timelines for implementation. The government has introduced a series of initiatives to enhance animal welfare, such as ending cruel puppy farms, examining the ban on electric shock collars, tackling dog attacks on farm animals, and prohibiting trail hunting.

Despite the absence of precise deadlines, the government aims to have the strategy in place by 2030. A consultation on trail hunting is scheduled for next year, and the government will review recommendations from Baroness Minette Batters on farm profitability.

Various stakeholders, including Owen Sharp from the Dogs Trust and Green MP Adrian Ramsay, have expressed support for the Animal Welfare Strategy but emphasized the necessity of clear timelines and robust enforcement to ensure effective animal protection measures.
