The Defence Secretary has promised to put an end to the issue of substandard military housing after completing upgrades to 1,000 homes ahead of schedule.
John Healey has directed an additional 250 military properties to receive priority renovations in the upcoming months, marking a 25% increase from the initial target set eight months ago. The housing improvement initiative has already seen enhancements to nearly 700 properties in England, over 150 in Northern Ireland, more than 100 in Wales, and over 50 in Scotland.
In an interview with The Mirror at a barracks in Colchester, Mr. Healey emphasized the positive impact of the progress on morale and retention, pledging to eradicate the longstanding problem of inadequate military housing.
Mr. Healey expressed, “One of the most significant scandals in recent years has been the deplorable condition of the residences provided for our service members and their families. Within six months of taking office, we reclaimed 36,000 military family homes from privatization, initiating a £9 billion investment over the next decade to upgrade or rebuild nine out of 10 Forces family homes.”
Confirming the achievement of the set target ahead of schedule, Mr. Healey stated, “We have successfully revamped a thousand of the worst homes, ensuring more families have suitable accommodations this Christmas. These upgraded homes are now comparable to those anyone would be proud to live in, correcting a long-standing injustice.”
Throughout the country, homes have undergone extensive renovations, including new flooring, replacement of boilers and heating systems, roof repairs, and installation of new bathrooms, kitchens, windows, and doors.
Mr. Healey highlighted that these measures not only boost morale but also contribute to retaining personnel in the armed forces. He remarked, “The quality of housing has a direct impact on morale and retention rates, and I anticipate these improvements will positively influence both aspects.”
Cpl Jack Crean, his partner Nina, and their one-year-old son Charlie recently moved into one of the newly refurbished homes at Bassingbourn Barracks in Cambridgeshire. Cpl Crean expressed his satisfaction with the upgraded home, noting the positive impact on his family’s well-being and morale.
