Controversial Eye Pokes Lead to No Contest in Aspinall vs. Gane UFC Title Fight

Tom Aspinall’s first heavyweight championship fight ended in controversy as the match was declared a no contest due to eye pokes by Ciryl Gane. Aspinall, a top British star, had a challenging year but last showcased his skills in July 2024 with a quick victory over Curtis Blaydes.

Initially set to face Jon Jones, Aspinall became the undisputed champion after Jones retired without committing to a fight. Aspinall’s much-anticipated bout against Gane turned chaotic in the first round when a referee intervened due to an accidental eye poke, leading to the fight being halted.

Ahead of UFC 321, questions arose whether Gane’s fight against Aspinall would be his final chance at the 265lb title. Gane, known for his previous failed attempts at the undisputed championship, faced Aspinall with determination. The fight began with Gane displaying agility and speed, targeting Aspinall’s lead leg with jabs and kicks.

Despite a competitive exchange, the match took a turn when Gane unintentionally poked Aspinall in the eyes, causing distress to the champion. Aspinall expressed frustration over the incident, while Gane apologized for the outcome and expressed disappointment over the fight’s premature end.

Following the bout, Aspinall was taken to the hospital for evaluation. UFC president Dana White confirmed plans to reschedule the heavyweight clash. In other fights, Mackenzie Dern claimed the women’s strawweight title, Umar Nurmagomedov and Alexander Volkov secured victories, and Aleksandar Rakic scored a knockout win on the main card of UFC 321.
