A British tourist, Elaine McSorley, 71, has been reported missing for a week after venturing alone to a lake known for its resident man-eating crocodiles in South Africa’s KwaZulu Province. Elaine and her husband Leon, 81, were staying at a hotel in Mkhuze when they decided to explore the wildlife nearby last Friday. Despite Leon returning to the hotel due to the heat and distance, Elaine continued her hike alone. Concerned when she did not return after several hours, Leon raised the alarm, prompting search efforts around the lake since September 27.
Law enforcement officials highlighted the challenges in assessing Elaine’s situation without Leon’s presence, making it difficult to determine her fitness for hiking and medical condition. While Leon’s whereabouts are currently unknown, he was confirmed to have returned to the hotel at 2:40 pm, with Elaine last seen at 3 pm seeking directions from a farmer near the lake.
Authorities noted the absence of crime in the area where Elaine disappeared and emphasized the lack of evidence following extensive search operations involving dogs, locals, helicopters, and boats. Speculations range from foul play to a potential crocodile attack, given the known risks posed by the creatures in the region. Crocodiles in Africa are responsible for numerous fatalities annually, with lengths reaching up to 20 feet.
