“Britain’s Youngest Dementia Victim, Andre Yarham, Dies at 24”

Britain’s youngest individual afflicted with dementia, possessing the cognitive function of a 70-year-old, has sadly passed away at the age of 24.

Andre Yarham was informed of his early-onset dementia condition after displaying sluggish movements and speech, leading to a diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia attributed to a specific protein mutation shortly before his 23rd birthday.

Frontotemporal dementia is a rare variant of the ailment affecting approximately one in 20 dementia patients. Andre, hailing from Dereham in Norfolk, succumbed on December 27 at a hospice due to an infection.

His mother, Sam Fairbairn, aged 49, honored her son’s memory by donating his brain for scientific research in the fight against this ‘cruel’ disease. She described Andre as a spirited young man with a delightful sense of humor and a compassionate nature.

Highlighting the lack of awareness surrounding the severity of dementia, Sam emphasized the importance of understanding the diverse types, symptoms, and behaviors associated with the condition. She expressed hope that by contributing to medical research, Andre’s legacy would potentially extend the quality time families spend with their loved ones grappling with dementia.

Sam recounted how Andre began exhibiting signs of forgetfulness in 2022, often appearing vacant when spoken to and occasionally disregarding conversations entirely. Following an MRI scan in 2023, a consultant revealed that Andre’s brain resembled that of a 70-year-old, confirming his early-onset dementia diagnosis.

Being part of the mere 0.1 percent of the UK population diagnosed with dementia before age 65, Andre’s condition came as a devastating blow to his family. Sam shared the challenges of caring for her son round-the-clock as his condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to his eventual admission to a nursing home.

Despite his decline, Andre’s vibrant past as a sports enthusiast and a skilled employee at Lotus Cars, where he worked on car headliners, was remembered fondly by his loved ones. His passion for wrestling, sports, and video games like Fifa and Call of Duty reflected a life full of diverse interests and experiences.

As Andre’s health rapidly declined due to an infection in December, he was transferred to Priscilla Bacon Lodge Hospice, where he peacefully passed away on December 27, leaving a void in the hearts of his family and friends.
