“Banks to Close 10 Branches Amid Shift to Online Banking”

Three prominent banks are planning to shut down an additional ten bank branches this week, dealing a significant blow to customers. Halifax is set to close five branches, while NatWest will be shutting down four, and Lloyds will be closing one location. The decision comes as high street banks report a decline in branch usage, with more individuals opting for online banking services.

Despite the banks’ rationale, charities are concerned that vulnerable individuals may face challenges accessing essential banking services. Data from Which? reveals that a total of 6,561 branches have been closed by banks and building societies since January 2015, averaging 53 closures monthly.

Which? has projected 432 branch closures for 2025, including 105 from NatWest, 101 from Halifax, 95 from Santander, 93 from Lloyds, 24 from Bank of Scotland, eight from TSB, and six from Barclays.

In 2026, 71 bank branches are slated for closure, with Lloyds accounting for 40 closures, Bank of Scotland for 17, and Halifax for 14.

For those impacted by branch closures, basic cash or counter services can still be availed at the nearest Post Office. Some banks now operate pop-up branches or vans, but individuals are advised to check online for visiting schedules in their area.

According to a NatWest spokesperson, the shift towards digital services is driven by customer preferences, with over 80% of active current account holders utilizing digital services. Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson highlighted the availability of apps, telephone banking, community bankers, and access to multiple branches for customers’ convenience.
