“B.C. lifts state of emergency as wildfire risk remains high”

British Columbia’s forests minister has announced the end of the provincewide state of emergency related to wildfires, although the wildfire risk persists. The state of emergency was initially declared on August 8 following the evacuation of numerous residents in the Summerland area due to the Bald Range wildfire. It was extended on August 21 but has now been lifted, as confirmed by Forests Minister Ravi Parmar during a press briefing in Summerland. Despite the ongoing wildfire season with more intense and prolonged fire seasons expected, Parmar stated that the emergency tools are currently unnecessary.

Parmar also urged tourists to return to the Okanagan to support local businesses that have been impacted by the wildfires, emphasizing the importance of buying local and contributing to the community’s recovery efforts.

In a separate development, the B.C. Wildfire Service disclosed plans to lift the offroad vehicle ban imposed across various regions of the province. The ban is scheduled to expire on Friday at noon PT. The decision to rescind the prohibition comes as certain parts of British Columbia experience improved conditions and with cooler, wetter weather predicted in the upcoming forecast.

The offroad vehicle ban was initially enforced on August 10, prohibiting the recreational use of such vehicles on Crown land within the Kamloops Fire Centre, Southeast Fire Centre, as well as areas of the Cariboo and Coastal fire centres. The B.C. Wildfire Service emphasized that they will continue to monitor the wildfire risk and may implement or rescind restrictions based on changing conditions.
