Andre De Grasse Secures Spot in Diamond League Final

Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse secured his spot in the Diamond League Final for the fifth time after competing in the Weltklasse Zürich meet. Despite not achieving his fastest time of the season, De Grasse finished the 200-meter race in 20.03 seconds, coming in behind American Kenny Bednarek and South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, who set impressive times of 19.62 and 19.82 respectively.

This race marked De Grasse’s return to the 200-meter event since his victory in Zagreb, Croatia, where he clocked 19.95. The Markham, Ont., athlete had a strong start to the season with a win in Botswana and a fifth-place finish in the Rabat Diamond League.

De Grasse, who holds the Canadian record in the 200 meters, showcased a remarkable performance at the 2023 Diamond League Final, becoming the first Canadian to win the Diamond League Trophy in several years. He will aim to continue his success in the upcoming Diamond League Final, along with fellow Canadians Marco Arop and Sarah Mitton.

The men’s 200-meter field at the Final will feature top athletes like Dambile, Tebogo, Bednarek, Charamba, Lindsey, Mena, and Figueroa. Bednarek expressed satisfaction with his performance, emphasizing the importance of consistent progress throughout the season leading up to the upcoming world championships in Tokyo.

In another event, Toronto native Lucia Stafford competed in the women’s 1,500-meter race, finishing fourth with a time of 4:04.12. Stafford’s performance fell short of her season best, achieved in Rabat, Morocco. She previously clinched the Canadian 1,500 title and secured a fourth-place finish at the Commonwealth Games.

The meet also witnessed record-breaking performances in hurdles by Alison dos Santos and Masai Russell. Dos Santos set a new world record in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 45.80 seconds, while Russell established a new record in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 12.09 seconds.

The pole vault competition featured a thrilling showdown between Mondo Duplantis and Emmanouil Karalis, with Karalis emerging as a strong challenger. Karalis, who soared to 6.17 meters earlier in the year, showcased his potential by pushing Duplantis to his limits and setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the season.

As the Diamond League Final and World Athletics Ultimate Championships approach, fans can anticipate an intense battle between Duplantis and Karalis, setting the stage for potential fireworks in the pole vault event.
