“Gruffalo Granny” Continues Hit Legacy in Latest Release

Renowned children’s author Julia Donaldson recently shared in an interview the unexpected success of her classic book, “The Gruffalo,” which she initially doubted would even be published due to its dark themes back in 1999. Despite the unconventional rhyming style, the story broke the mold and became a hit.

Fast forward 26 years, Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler have released “Gruffalo Granny,” the latest addition to the beloved series. This new installment follows the original Gruffalo and his child as they prepare to welcome Gruffalo Granny, known for her enormous appetite. The mischievous mouse once again finds itself in a precarious situation.

Donaldson described the writing process for “Gruffalo Granny” as reminiscent of crafting the original story. Her focus remains on creating a captivating narrative rather than catering to a specific audience.

The promotion of “Gruffalo Granny” reached new heights when an illustration was projected onto the British Library, leading to record-breaking sales within days of its release. The book quickly became the top-selling book in the UK for all age groups and genres in 2026, with over 227,000 copies sold in just three days.

Despite hinting that she may not write another Gruffalo book, Donaldson’s writing journey continues with her upcoming book, “Winnifred Duck.” Inspired by the true story of rubber ducks lost at sea and their global journey, the book is set to be released early next year.

The enduring appeal of Donaldson and Scheffler’s creations has transcended generations, with adults passing on the magic of the Gruffalo to their children and grandchildren. The success of “Gruffalo Granny” reflects the timeless charm of these beloved characters.
