“Liberal MP Lori Idlout Breaches Conflict of Interest Code”

Liberal MP Lori Idlout of Ottawa was found to have breached Parliament’s conflict of interest code by the ethics commissioner. However, no penalties were recommended for her actions. The investigation by Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner Konrad von Finckenstein focused on Idlout’s purchases from her own business, which she billed to the House of Commons. Idlout refunded the House, attributing the submission of these items as an error.

In response to the report, Idlout expressed gratitude to the commissioner and acknowledged the findings, emphasizing her serious approach to the matter. She explained that she had not anticipated that these purchases, made for parliamentary purposes, would benefit her private interests, as she does not derive any income from the businesses involved. Commissioner Finckenstein characterized Idlout’s actions as errors in judgment made in good faith. He noted that Idlout promptly repaid the House upon discovering the errors, indicating a genuine intent to rectify the non-compliance instances.

Idlout, the sole shareholder and director of Carvings Nunavut, a gallery specializing in Inuit-made sculptures and artwork, claimed 13 purchases as protocol gifts since assuming office, with four originating from her own business. The commissioner determined that Idlout violated the code of ethics by acting to advance her personal interests.

The purchases from Carvings Nunavut totaled $1,756, all made in 2025. The largest transaction, amounting to $1,380, included various items like cards, tote bags, keychains, and sculptures, intended as gifts for Indigenous leaders and elders at an NDP caucus event. Additional purchases included a wall hanging, a lapel pin gifted to a fellow MP, and other items presented to a government minister. These expenses occurred during Idlout’s tenure as an NDP MP before her party switch to the Liberals in 2026.

In light of these events, Conservative MP Michael Barrett urged the ethics commissioner to investigate Idlout’s conduct under the conflict of interest code. Idlout admitted her lapse in judgment and expressed regret, pledging to learn from the experience and collaborate closely with the commissioner’s guidance in the future.
