Gary Southgate’s dream of showcasing the “Valley of Hidden Secrets” in southwest Saskatchewan’s Frenchman River Valley has come to life with the launch of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours. The journey on vintage trains through scenic landscapes marked a significant milestone for Southgate, a North Battleford farmer, who has been passionately collecting and restoring old trains since 2013.
Reflecting on the inaugural public ride last month, Southgate shared his emotional experience, admitting to shedding a few tears. His fascination with trains dates back to his childhood days of watching steam locomotives pass by in Biggar to North Battleford. This initial spark led him to acquire a 1929 Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive before shifting his focus to Canadian National (CN) equipment to recreate the ambiance of the classic Super Continental passenger trains.
Southgate’s collection has grown substantially over the years, with numerous rail cars saved from salvage yards for restoration and potential reuse. Notably, two of his cars featured in the Polar Express movies, and he acquired the historic Cape Tormentime rail car once used by Eleanor Roosevelt during a Canadian trip.
Despite facing challenges, such as disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the logistical hurdles of managing the tour while farming 360 kilometers away, Southgate remains determined. Collaborating with Great Western Railway, Eastend Scenic Rail Tours has successfully conducted four trips this year, with additional rides planned, including a sold-out excursion. The scenic beauty of the Frenchman River Valley has captivated passengers, drawing visitors from various parts of the country and even overseas.
Looking ahead, Southgate envisions further developments, including an RV park, a museum showcasing vintage train equipment, and a winter maintenance facility at the railyard in Eastend. His ultimate goal is to preserve history, create a unique experience for Eastend, the province, and Canada, and ensure the sustainability of his passion project for future generations.
