A police officer in Saskatoon is being praised for their exceptional courage in the daring rescue of a teenage boy trapped in a storm drain by swiftly flowing rainwater last week. The situation, deemed potentially life-threatening by Deputy Fire Chief Sean Thody, was tense for both the teen and the emergency responders. Thody expressed the toll such situations can take on individuals when faced with uncertainty.
The incident unfolded when officers responded to a distress call at a dog park near the 3700 block of Kinnear Avenue around 8 p.m. CST on Aug. 14. Upon arrival, they discovered the young man stuck inside the storm drain, wedged against the grate by the rushing water’s force. Thody explained the physical impossibility of resisting such a strong water current.
The initial officer on the scene bravely entered the drain, keeping the boy’s head above water until the fire department arrived to coordinate the rescue operation. Described as “organized chaos” by Thody, the rescue involved using spreaders to pry apart sections of the grate and saws to cut through metal bars, creating enough space for the teen to pass through. The entire rescue operation lasted nearly two hours before the teen was safely transported to the hospital.
City officials revealed that the incident occurred when four teenage boys accessed the stormwater system through an outfall. As rain started, the storm sewers began to fill up. While three of the boys managed to escape, one was swept towards a grate-covered outfall and became trapped. Before emergency services arrived, the remaining teenagers helped shield their friend from the water, aiding his ability to breathe.
Following the ordeal, city authorities issued a warning advising residents to refrain from entering city infrastructure like sewers, bridges, or electrical substations. Only authorized personnel should be permitted access to these hazardous locations. The city emphasized the importance of reporting any compromised infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future.
