Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, sitting at the bottom of the league standings, caused an upset by defeating the Ottawa Rapid, who lead the league, with a score of 4-3 in a Northern Super League match held at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for Calgary in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 around 13 minutes later. Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the net in the 38th minute, leveling the score at 2-2 just before halftime when Melanie Forbes scored in stoppage time.
Thurton secured her second goal just before halftime, propelling the Wild to victory. Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for Calgary, bringing their season record to two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris managed to score a penalty in the 86th minute for Ottawa, who now stand at 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, seeing their unbeaten streak of 10 matches come to an end.
Despite Ottawa’s 54% possession, they were outshot by Calgary 16-13 (with 9 shots on target to Ottawa’s 6). Calgary also took six out of the 11 corner kicks, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card during the match.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to equalize the game and then netted a second goal five minutes into stoppage time in the second half, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had given the fourth-placed Tides a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 19th minute. The Rise, positioned in fifth place, dominated possession with 56% and outshot the Tides 18-13, including 6 shots on target to Halifax’s 4.
Halifax took four out of the six corner kicks, while Vancouver received two of the three yellow cards issued during the match.
