A woman, who caused a fatal collision by driving in the wrong direction on a divided highway, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, has been granted pre-approval for day parole, effective next month. Brittany Barry, aged 35, admitted to driving under the influence, leading to the fatalities of Laura Hannah, 53, and Jamie Hannah, 20, as well as causing injuries to her own children present in the vehicle during the incident. The tragic crash occurred on October 19, 2024, on Highway 11 near Dundurn, approximately 35 kilometers southeast of Saskatoon.
Barry is currently serving a six-year prison sentence, which began on March 14, 2025, and she is halfway through her term. According to the Parole Board of Canada regulations, federal prisoners can be considered for full parole after serving one-third of their sentence, with the possibility of applying for day parole six months prior to that milestone. In a recent decision on August 11, Barry’s application for release to a halfway house upon eligibility for day parole was approved by the Parole Board.
While the victims’ family members expressed concerns about the timing of Barry’s release, citing the gravity of her offense, the parole board acknowledged Barry’s acknowledgment of her actions and efforts towards personal development. Barry has committed to leading a sober life, prioritizing her role as a mother to her children, and avoiding any behaviors that could jeopardize their safety.
The board noted Barry’s compliance with rules during her time in minimum security and granted her certain leave privileges while at the halfway house. These permissions include unescorted temporary absences for family visits, church attendance, and participation in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. In addition, specific conditions were imposed on Barry’s day parole, such as abstaining from alcohol, avoiding bars, refraining from driving, and adhering to prescribed treatment and counseling. She is also prohibited from contacting the victims’ family members, except for her own children, in alignment with the existing seven-year driving ban imposed as part of her sentence.
