Teen Rescues Stranded Shark, Inspires Community

In a heartwarming act of kindness, Finn Holland, a 15-year-old animal enthusiast from Maces Bay, New Brunswick, sprang into action when he discovered a stranded shark on the shore near his home. With a deep passion for wildlife, Finn didn’t hesitate to assist the creature in need.

Accompanied by his family, Finn drove down to the beach where the shark lay, showing signs of distress. Despite its imposing size of around two meters and weighing approximately 70 kilograms, Finn approached the situation with courage and determination. He carefully guided the shark back into the ocean, where it swiftly swam away, thanks to his intervention.

Identified as a porbeagle shark, the rare encounter left Finn astonished but fulfilled. His mother, Jill Holland, shared that Finn’s selfless act was characteristic of his compassionate nature, always ready to lend a helping hand without hesitation.

Living in Maces Bay for over a decade, the Hollands had never encountered sharks in the area before. Shark expert Neil Hammerschlag noted the rarity of such sightings in natural environments, highlighting the uniqueness of the experience. Porbeagles, known for their ability to regulate body temperature in cold waters, are not typically found in shallow areas, raising concerns about the shark’s well-being.

Hammerschlag suggested that the shark may have been distressed due to illness or previous interactions with fishing gear, as overfishing has contributed to their declining population. Despite being declared endangered in the Atlantic Ocean in 2004, the federal government has yet to take action to protect the species.

Finn expressed gratitude for the overwhelming community support following his heroic act, emphasizing the unspoken connection he felt with the shark he helped save. In a touching reflection, Finn acknowledged the silent appreciation he sensed from the animal, affirming that his actions were indeed the right thing to do.
